Half Sleeve Tattoo Ideas for Men, Upper or Lower

21 men's half sleeve tattoos photographed on skin for InkCraftBy Updated

For men the half sleeve question is usually upper or lower: one hides under a t-shirt, the other is on show in one. These half sleeve tattoos for men are photographed on the arm, with how a big upper arm or a hairy forearm changes the plan for each.

Every pair is one tattoo: the design as it was drawn, and a photograph of that same design on the body.

Upper half: deltoid to elbow, under the hem

An upper half sleeve covers the deltoid, bicep and tricep, which on a broad arm is room for two or three substantial subjects and a background. The catch is the t-shirt hem. On many men's t-shirts it lands around the middle of the bicep, so the lower third of an upper half sleeve shows even when the rest is covered. If full cover matters, the design needs to thin out or stop higher at the front; if it does not, the elbow end can be as busy as you like.

The tricep is the part people forget. Seen from behind, it is half the upper arm, and on a trained arm it is a big, curved surface that needs its own subject or its own share of background. A half sleeve that looks full from the front and empty from behind is a common sign it was planned from the front view only.

Lower half: forearm hair and a steadier canvas

Running elbow to wrist, a lower half sleeve is visible in every short-sleeved shirt and hidden by any long one worn down. On the outer forearm it has to contend with hair: a dark background reads through regrowth, whereas a light, open one only reads freshly shaved. The inner forearm, usually less hairy, can carry the finer parts of the design.

Of the two, the lower half changes least as the years go by. Forearms hold their size through changes in training and weight far better than upper arms do, so a lower half sleeve keeps its proportions where an upper one may stretch or soften. The half sleeve page has sessions, pain and cost.

Common questions

Upper or lower half sleeve if I need to cover it at work?
Upper. A t-shirt covers most of it and a long-sleeved shirt covers all of it, even with the cuffs rolled. A lower half sleeve is hidden only by long sleeves worn down, so it shows the moment you roll them up.
Will an upper half sleeve show below a t-shirt?
The bottom part usually will, because many t-shirt sleeves end halfway down the bicep. Try the stencil on with the t-shirts you wear most and decide whether the part that peeks out should be background that fades off, or a finished edge you are happy to show.
How many subjects fit in a half sleeve on a big arm?
Usually two or three main subjects with background around them, or one large one that wraps. More than that and each gets small for the arm, and the whole thing reads as busy. The tricep and the inner arm count as space, and that is where the background earns its hours.
Which half sleeve styles suit a big upper arm?
Styles that join a few large subjects with a background. Japanese work wraps a dragon or a koi in wind and water; traditional holds a phoenix or a heart in bold outline and solid colour through hair and training; biomechanical follows the muscle itself and can run on past the elbow. Fine line suits an upper half sleeve too, kept to the smoother inner and front faces.
