Across the tricep, the elbow and the forearm swell
On a muscular arm a full sleeve does not run down a smooth tube. The deltoid swells, the arm narrows above the elbow, the tricep bulges behind it and the forearm swells again below. Large subjects belong on the wide parts, the deltoid, the outer bicep and the upper forearm, and the background does its work in the narrow parts, especially around the elbow, where it can wrap without anything important being folded.
Size shifts during the project are normal. A sleeve takes months or years, and an arm that gains or loses muscle in that time changes the proportions between finished and unfinished sections. Artists handle this by leaving the background, the flexible part, until the end, and telling them if you are partway through a training programme helps them plan for it.
Where a full sleeve ends at the wrist
The wrist ending decides how visible the whole sleeve is. Ending right at the wrist gives a clean cuff that shows whenever a shirt sleeve rides up. Ending a hand-width higher, where a watch or a buttoned cuff sits, lets a long-sleeved shirt hide the sleeve completely. If you wear a watch daily, stopping just above it, or treating the watch as the border, avoids ink hidden and rubbed under the strap.
Hair runs through all of it: sparse on the inner arm, heavier on the outer forearm and sometimes on the upper arm. - Should a full sleeve end at the wrist or above the watch line?
- Above the watch line if you want a long-sleeved shirt to hide it, or if a daily watch would otherwise sit over the ink. At the wrist if you want the sleeve to look finished whenever it shows. The second is the classic look; the first is the more flexible one.
- What if my arm size changes while the sleeve is in progress?
- Tell your artist. Moderate changes are absorbed by the background, which is usually done last and can be fitted to the arm as it is by then. Large changes can shift the spacing between subjects already inked, so it helps to start the sleeve when your build is fairly settled.
- Does arm hair show through a full sleeve?
- It covers the lighter parts. Solid black and dark background read clearly with the hair grown back, while thin lines, soft grey and areas of open skin look patchy until you shave. If you do not plan to keep the arm shaved, ask for a darker background.
- What full sleeve styles work on a muscular arm?
- Styles with their own way of filling the gaps. Blackwork and geometric sleeves let pattern cover the tricep and the elbow; traditional and neo-traditional sleeves put a dragon, a clock or an owl on the wide parts and let dark shading carry the rest.
