Claw Tattoo Ideas: Talons, Paws and Claw Marks
13 original claw designs drawn for InkCraftBy Uladzimir TumanauUpdated
A claw is an animal's strength cut down to the part that grips or tears, and each species says something different. Torn claw marks depend on solid black packed inside the gashes, since a shallow grey shadow heals flat and the ripped-skin illusion disappears.

What a claw tattoo means
A claw is what an animal fights, climbs and holds with, so a tattoo of one shows strength at the point where it does its work rather than as a whole beast. The species settles the rest, and this page runs from a house cat to a dragon. A bear's long claw is power and protection; a tiger's, hooked and spread over striped fur, is ferocity; a hawk's talons are the grip that does not let go. A crab's pincer stands for the sign of Cancer, and a scaled dragon's foot closed round a sphere recalls the pearl Chinese dragons chase.
A claw held back means something too. A cat keeps its claws sheathed until the moment they are needed, the cheetah being the one cat whose claws never fully retract, so an unsheathed claw is readiness: power that was there all along and has just been shown. Claws are keratin, like fingernails, and never stop growing; a cat scratches to strip the worn outer layer, which is what a scratching post is for.
Claw marks are a different image: not the animal but what it did. Three or four slashes are a fight survived, an attack come through with the scars to prove it, and drawn as torn skin with darkness beneath they suggest something wild tearing its way out from inside. That second reading is the one people mean by an inner animal, and it borrows the peeled-skin trick from biomechanical tattooing, which grew out of the paintings of H. R. Giger.
Not every claw is a threat. The orange cat's paw here, seen from underneath with pink toe beans and four grey claws out, is a pet caught mid-swat, and it belongs with the portraits of one particular animal and its temper. The bear, wolf and dog prints with claws showing sit between the two: the trace an animal left, not its weapon.
Where the design comes from
People wore real claws long before they drew them. Eight white-tailed eagle talons from Krapina in Croatia, cut and polished by Neanderthals about 130,000 years ago, are among the oldest ornaments known. On the upper Missouri George Catlin painted leaders in necklaces of grizzly claws in the 1830s, and Victorian visitors to British India brought home tiger claws mounted in gold, a trade India banned with its Wildlife Protection Act of 1972. The torn-skin claw mark is recent by comparison, and so is its comic-book double: Wolverine, the Marvel mutant with three blades in each hand, first appeared in 1974.
Choosing yours
- Match the shape to the animal. A cat's or a tiger's claw is short, hooked and needle-pointed; a black bear's is short and curved for climbing, a grizzly's long and straighter for digging, up to about 10 cm. A hawk's foot has four scaled toes, three forward and one back.
- Torn claw marks are an illusion of ripped skin, and they depend on how densely the black is packed inside the gashes; a shallow grey shadow heals flat and the effect disappears. Four marks read as an animal's swipe. Three read as Wolverine, and three green ones as the Monster Energy logo of 2002.
- Fill the tips: a solid black point stays sharp where an outlined one softens as the lines spread.
Size, cost and placement
How big, and what it costs
A single claw, a talon or the pendant is shop-minimum work to an hour at 5 to 8 cm. Claw marks are drawn at the size of a real swipe, 12 to 20 cm, and take two or three hours because of the depth in the gashes; the colour tiger's paw or the stippled dragon's foot runs to half a day.
Where it sits, and how much it hurts
Claw marks convince where a swipe would land, diagonally across the ribs, the shoulder blade, the outer thigh or the chest. A talon reaching down suits the top of the shoulder, as if the bird had just landed. The ribs hurt most; the thigh and shoulder are easier.
What to ask your artist
- Which animal the claw belongs to, and whether its curve and length match.
- How deep the black inside the gashes will go, so the torn edges read once healed.
- Whether the tips should be filled solid at your size.
Prices vary widely by city and artist — treat these as session lengths rather than quotes, and expect a shop minimum on anything small. The cost guide turns hours into money by size, placement and style.
Common questions
What is the difference between a claw and a talon?
Talon is kept for birds of prey. A hawk kills with its feet, and raptor comes from the Latin rapere, to seize, so talons read as a grip that holds; a cat's or a bear's claws read as a swipe.
Is a bear claw pendant a Native American symbol?
Not in itself: claws and teeth have hung on cords in many cultures, and the single claw with two beads here copies no one's regalia. Grizzly-claw necklaces were marks of rank among some Plains and upper Missouri nations, though, so copying a particular nation's necklace borrows something of theirs.
Which way should the torn edges curl?
Edges peeled back towards the viewer suggest something tearing out from underneath, the inner-animal reading; edges pushed inward suggest a swipe from outside. The blackwork marks here curl back as if ripped outward.
Can a claw tattoo be about a pet?
Yes. For a cat remembered for its temper, a paw with the claws out says more than a sleeping curl, and the new-school cat paw here, toe beans and all, is that kind of piece.
