Strength Tattoo Ideas and What They Stand For
40 InkCraft designs chosen for strength tattoosBy Uladzimir TumanauUpdated
There are two kinds of strength tattoo and they say opposite things. A lion, a tiger, a bear are strength as force — something that could hurt you and does not. An anchor, a tree, a lotus are strength as endurance — something that holds or survives. Most people asking for a strength tattoo want the second and get shown the first.
The distinction matters because the enduring motifs are the ones that stay true. Force is a claim about what you can do, and bodies change. Endurance is a claim about what you have already come through, and that never becomes untrue.
Both kinds appear here, with what each one is actually claiming. The quieter ones sit at the bottom and are usually the better choice.
9 designs that carry it, and why
- Lion
- Strength as authority rather than violence — the lion is the animal that does not need to prove it. The most-asked-for strength motif by a wide margin, and the most generic.
- Tiger
- Strength in motion, where the lion is strength at rest. In Japanese work it specifically fights the wind and represents strength against something rather than over it.
- Wolf
- Strength that belongs to a group. The reading is about the pack, not the individual, which is why it suits people whose strength came from other people.
- Phoenix
- Strength as recovery — the only motif here that requires having been destroyed first. Reads as survival rather than power.
- Anchor
- Holds against a current that never stops pulling. That is a different and more honest claim than a lion’s: not that you are strong, but that you have kept hold.
- Tree
- Survives what it cannot escape, by bending and by having roots. The strength motif for people who stayed rather than fought.
- Shark
- Has to keep moving to breathe. Read as relentlessness rather than aggression, which is why it turns up in recovery work as often as in bravado.
- Eagle
- Strength with distance — seeing the whole thing from above. In American traditional work it is also explicitly patriotic, so it carries that whether you intend it or not.
- Aries
- The ram goes in head first. People born under the sign wear the glyph or the horns for a stubbornness they are proud of, and it reads as strength before it reads as astrology.

Why the quiet ones age better
A lion on a twenty-five-year-old and a lion on a fifty-five-year-old are read differently by everyone who sees them, including the wearer. Force imagery is implicitly a claim about the present. Endurance imagery is a claim about the past, and the past does not stop being true.
The practical version: if you are marking having survived something, the anchor, the tree and the phoenix will still be exactly right in thirty years. If you are marking being formidable, think about whether that is a thing you want to have declared permanently.
Size, and why big cats need it
Animal faces need room. A lion or a tiger below about 10 cm loses the detail that makes it read as that specific animal, and what is left is a generic big cat — the single most common disappointment in this category. If the space you have is small, choose a motif built from simple shapes: an anchor, a tree line, a phoenix in silhouette.
The forearm, outer upper arm and calf are the fields that take an animal head at the size it needs. Chest and back take the full animal. Wrists, ankles and fingers do not take either, and an artist who agrees to put a realistic lion on a wrist is agreeing to something that will be a grey blur in a decade.
Line weight is the other lever. A bold traditional lion survives small precisely because the heavy outline was invented to survive; a fine-line or single-needle animal at the same size will not.
Common questions
- What tattoo symbolises inner strength?
- The enduring motifs rather than the forceful ones: an anchor holding against a current, a tree surviving what it cannot escape, a lotus coming up clean out of mud, a phoenix returning after burning. All four are claims about having come through something, which is what inner strength usually means.
- Is a lion tattoo overdone?
- It is the most common strength motif there is, which matters only if uniqueness matters to you. A well-drawn lion at a proper size is a good tattoo regardless. If you want the meaning without the ubiquity, the endurance motifs say it more precisely anyway.
- How big does a strength tattoo need to be?
- Animal faces need roughly 10 cm or more to still read as that animal after ink spread. Simpler motifs — anchor, tree, phoenix silhouette — hold down to 5 or 6 cm. This is the most common sizing mistake in the category.
- What represents strength after a hard time specifically?
- A phoenix, a lotus or an unalome. All three are structurally about having come through rather than about being powerful, and all three read that way to people who know the symbol without announcing anything to people who do not.
