Rose Window Tattoo Ideas, Designs and Meaning
12 original rose window designs drawn for InkCraftBy Uladzimir TumanauUpdated
Stained glass is drawn the way a bold tattoo is, black lead around flat colour, which is why a cathedral's round window moves onto skin so easily. The circle needs a flat field, the upper back or the sternum, because a curved limb squeezes it into an oval.

What a rose window tattoo means
A rose window is light put in order. The round opening at the west front or the end of a transept of a Gothic cathedral is filled with stone tracery radiating from a centre, and the glass between the stones turns daylight into colour for the people inside. For its builders that was theology. Abbot Suger, who rebuilt the abbey church of Saint-Denis near Paris in the 1140s, had verses cut on its doors saying the dull mind rises to truth through material things, and coloured light was the material thing he meant.
The centre says what a window is for. Most great roses hold Christ or the Virgin in the middle, so the whole wheel turns round one figure; the north rose of Notre-Dame de Paris, whose violet and deep blue the watercolour here borrows, rings the Virgin and Child with some eighty kings, judges and prophets of the Old Testament. A few are not devotional at all. At San Zeno in Verona the stonemason Brioloto carved the façade rose as a Wheel of Fortune, with figures climbing one side and tumbling down the other, which suits a life's rises and falls more than a faith.
Most of the designs are the window alone, a wheel of tracery in stipple, bold line, jewel colour or watercolour. The gothic blackwork pieces set something in the stonework instead: a heart pierced by three nails, the nails of the Crucifixion; a bell under a cross, like a belfry opening; a pointed arch with quatrefoils and a cracked pane. Those read as plainly Christian. Many people wear a bare rose for a particular building, the cathedral of a home city or the church where they married.
Two designs put a real rose at the centre, one in red among blue and green glass, one where the stone spokes open into petals. The pun is later than the windows: the name rose window is not recorded before the seventeenth century.
Where the design comes from
The round window is older than Gothic. Roman builders left an open oculus, an eye, at the top of domes such as the Pantheon's, Romanesque churches filled it with spokes like a cart wheel, and in thirteenth-century France it opened into the great roses of Chartres, Notre-Dame and Reims, whose radiating tracery gave the Rayonnant style its name. Glass was the hard part. Ruby made in the pot was so dense it looked black, so glaziers flashed a thin red skin onto clear glass, and the blues came from cobalt. In 1984 lightning set York Minster alight and the heat cracked the glass of its rose window in some 40,000 places; it was glued crack by crack and went back four years later. Notre-Dame's three roses came through the fire of April 2019.
Choosing yours
- Settle how much is window and how much is building. Most roses here are bare circles, which keeps them compact; the blackwork rose over a row of lancet arches, stacked as on a cathedral front, is a tall composition for a back or thigh.
- Count the repeats. A real rose turns one unit round its centre, so each spoke, lobe and trefoil matches its neighbours; a wheel drawn freehand drifts a few degrees and the eye finds it at once.
- Skin has no backlight. A window glows because the sun is behind it, so on a body the glass must be made brighter than the stone by contrast: the dotwork rose stipples its stone darker than its panes, and the cathedral rose holds ruby, cobalt and gold inside heavy black lead. The gold panes are the first to fade.
Size, cost and placement
How big, and what it costs
A bold line rose keeps its trefoils open at about 8 cm. The stippled and jewel-coloured roses want 12 to 15 cm and three to five hours, since every pane is its own small fill. The rose over lancet arches is a back or thigh piece of 20 cm or more, a day or longer.
Where it sits, and how much it hurts
The upper back, sternum, back of the shoulder and outer thigh are flat enough to keep a circle round. A forearm takes one only within its flat inner face; any wider and the curved surface squeezes the wheel into an oval. Sternum and spine are the sore ones.
What to ask your artist
- Whether the stencil will be built from one segment rotated round the centre.
- How thick the lead lines need to be for the colour to stay inside them.
- For a real cathedral's window, a reference photographed straight on, not from the floor.
Prices vary widely by city and artist — treat these as session lengths rather than quotes, and expect a shop minimum on anything small. The cost guide turns hours into money by size, placement and style.
Common questions
Is a rose window tattoo a religious symbol?
It is Christian architecture, so it carries faith for anyone who means it that way, but a bare wheel of tracery reads as a building first. A heart with nails, a cross or a figure at the centre makes it devotional.
Which cathedral inspired the purple and blue watercolour rose?
The north rose of Notre-Dame de Paris, glazed around 1250 and still mostly original glass. The watercolour keeps its violets and deep blues.
What does the cracked pane in the gothic arch suggest?
Damage survived, as at York Minster, whose rose window stayed in its frame through the 1984 fire despite its cracks. A window still standing with a broken pane says the same of a person.
Why does the heart in the window have three nails?
Western artists began crossing Christ's feet over a single nail in the thirteenth century, and three became the usual count for the Crucifixion; earlier images often show four.
