One technique, and where it came from

Every photograph on this page is fine line and none is minimalist, because our photographs of men include no minimalist work yet. That makes it a page about one technique: a single needle or a very small grouping, one thin line weight throughout and only light shading where there is any, on skulls, compasses, hearts, owls, tigers and a pair of dragons.

The technique is older than its current reputation. Single-needle black and grey came out of East Los Angeles in the 1970s, where Jack Rudy and Charlie Cartwright at Good Time Charlie's Tattooland took the fine work of prison tattooing, done on homemade machines, into a street shop. Decades later Dr. Woo, trained under Mark Mahoney at the Shamrock Social Club on Sunset Boulevard, made micro fine line the look of the 2010s.

That history is also why simple and small are separate choices on a man. The leopard among orchids covers most of the front of a thigh, a vine of anatomical hearts runs the length of an upper arm, and a crowned column drops down the spine; the monkey sitting in a hot spring, by contrast, fits on one segment of one finger.

How a thin line ages

The oldest tattoos preserved on a human body are simple ones. Ötzi, the man found in the Ötztal Alps in 1991 and dated to about 3300 BC, carries 61 marks, groups of short parallel lines and a few crosses, and they are still legible after five thousand years under ice. Marks like those survive because nothing in them sits close enough together to merge.

A thin line does lose contrast sooner than a bold one. It carries less pigment, and on skin that sees sun, the forearm, the back of the hand and a calf in shorts, that small load drifts towards grey faster. A touch-up that darkens the lines is a normal part of owning fine line; the pieces here that should need it least are the compass on the chest and the skull between the shoulder blades, both on skin a shirt keeps out of the sun.

Hair is the problem a man has that the drawing cannot solve by itself. The forearms, calves, shins, thighs and chest in this set are all places where regrown hair lies over the skin, and a design drawn in one thin weight loses its outer contour to it before anything else. If the arm will not stay shaved, ask for the same design with the outline a weight heavier than the detail inside it.

When simple turns thin

Simple turns thin when the drawing is too light for the surface under it. The single-line heart on a broad collarbone is the edge case here: a clean shape, correctly spaced, and small enough against the width of a man's shoulder that from across a room it reads as a mark rather than a design. The compass on the chest, drawn larger with a ring and four cardinal points, uses the same weight of line and holds its space.

The palms and fingers are the other place simple thins out. The grid has two of each, an angel and a skull with roses on the palms, a shark and that monkey on the fingers, and those are the spots where fine line lasts least, because palm skin renews quickly and fingers take grip and washing all day. Treat them as designs to refresh rather than to keep untouched.

The cure for thin is weight rather than size alone. Keep the drawing simple and ask for the outline in a heavier needle than the interior, or choose a subject with a strong silhouette. The climbing panther on the upper arm, a staple of American traditional flash, reads even in fine line because its shape does the work. Common questions

Does fine line suit a man with a lot of body hair?
On the inner arm, the collarbone and the ribs, where hair is usually lighter, yes. On a hairy forearm, calf or chest a fine line design reads clearly only when the skin is shaved, so either keep it shaved or ask for the outer contour drawn a weight heavier than the detail.
Is a simple tattoo too plain for a large area like the back?
Not if the drawing is scaled with it. The angel and the compass on the backs here are simple in line but sized to the space between the shoulder blades. The failure is a small simple design alone in the middle of a broad back, which reads as unfinished rather than restrained.
How often does a man's fine line tattoo need touching up?
Expect a line refresh at some point on skin that sees sun or wear, the hands, fingers, palms and forearms, and far less often on the chest, the back and the ribs. A fine line touch-up is usually one short sitting, because there is no shading to rebuild, only lines to retrace.
