Halloween tattoos divide cleanly in two, and only one half survives November. The first is seasonal: a pumpkin with a face, a cartoon witch, a dated character, a novelty. It is delightful for about six weeks and then it is a tattoo of a holiday you are not currently having. The second is gothic — the imagery Halloween borrowed rather than invented — and it works in March because it was never about October in the first place.
The distinction is easy to apply. Ask whether the design would look odd on a Tuesday in spring. A ghost drawn as a sheet with eye holes is a joke that only lands in season. A moth, a raven, a spider on its web, a bare skull: those are simply dark imagery, and they read the same in any month.

The seasonal trap
Studios run flash days in late October at low prices, and a great many of these tattoos are decided in under a minute in a queue. That is a perfectly good way to get one, and it is also why so many of them are regretted — the constraint that produces a bad choice is not the price, it is that nobody asks how the design will read in eleven months.
The tests are simple. Does it depend on a character, a film or a face? Those date fastest, and a licensed character also cannot be adjusted later without redrawing it entirely. Does it contain a year, a date or a slogan? Then it is a souvenir and should be sized like one. Does it rely on being funny? Humour is the fastest thing in a tattoo to stop working, because you stop being surprised by your own arm within about a month.
If you want a flash-day piece anyway, and many people sensibly do, take the smallest version offered and put it somewhere you do not habitually look. It stays a pleasant thing to rediscover rather than something in your eyeline every day.
Getting the atmosphere without the costume
Gothic imagery works through restraint, which is the opposite of how seasonal designs work. The unsettling version of a spider is anatomically correct and drawn at true scale; the unsettling version of a ghost is a figure half-emerged from something solid. Neither needs to announce itself, and that is precisely why neither wears out.
Style carries as much of it as subject. Heavy blackwork with large solid areas, or fine dotwork leaving the highlights bare, both read as gothic almost regardless of what is drawn — while the same motif in bright new-school colour reads as a cartoon. If the mood is what you are after rather than any specific image, choose the treatment first.
Placement contributes too, and it is the part most people never consider. A piece that wraps out of sight around a limb, or sits where it is only visible from one angle, carries more unease than the same drawing laid flat and fully visible on a forearm.
