What a moth tattoo means
The moth flying into the flame is the whole of its symbolism and it is more precise than it looks. The insect is not attracted to fire; it navigates by keeping a fixed angle to the moon, and a nearby flame breaks that calculation and spirals it inward. It is destroyed by a system that normally works, which is a far better image than simple self-destruction.
Against the butterfly it says something almost opposite. A butterfly is transformation completed and displayed in daylight; a moth is transformation that happens at night and is not for anyone. People who choose the moth usually mean the private version.
The death's-head hawkmoth has carried a reputation since long before any film used it. The skull marking on its thorax is real, it squeaks when handled, and it raids beehives — which is why European folklore attached it to death and why it is now the single most tattooed moth by a distance.
The luna moth argues the other way and is badly underused. It has no mouth, lives about a week and exists only to breed, which makes it a genuine memento mori with none of the skull imagery, and it is the most beautiful insect in the northern hemisphere.
Where the design comes from
Moths arrived in tattooing through the butterfly and then displaced it in a particular corner of the art. Victorian natural history made the specimen plate a household image, with the insect pinned, symmetrical and labelled, and that plate is the direct ancestor of the modern ornamental moth with its mandala-filled wings. The death's-head specifically has a documented cultural life going back to the eighteenth century, when its appearance was recorded as an omen in several European countries. In tattooing the subject belongs to the blackwork and dotwork wave of the 2010s, which suited it exactly: a moth is a symmetrical object made of scales, and stipple renders scales better than any line technique can.
Choosing yours
- Feathered antennae and a thick furry body. Those two details are what separate a moth from a butterfly at a glance, and a smooth body with club-tipped antennae will read as a butterfly no matter what else is in the drawing.
- Pick a species rather than a generic moth. The death's-head, the luna with its long tails, the atlas with snake-head markings at the wingtips and the hummingbird hawkmoth are four completely different drawings.
- Consider the rest position. Moths hold their wings flat or tented over the back, which butterflies never do, and drawing one at rest rather than spread is both rarer and more obviously a moth.

How big, and what it costs
A symmetrical moth at 10-12 cm in dotwork is three to four hours, and stipple on wing scales is slow. A simple blackwork silhouette is under two hours. An ornamental moth with a mandala worked into the wings is priced by the pattern rather than the size and can run to six hours.
Where it sits, and how much it hurts
Symmetrical moths want a flat centred field: the sternum, the nape, the centre of the back, the inner forearm. A moth at rest on a leaf or against a window is asymmetric and suits the outer arm or the calf. Avoid placements that fold one wing, since the symmetry is the design.

- Which species, by name, and to work from a specimen photograph rather than from other tattoos.
- Whether the wing scales will be stippled individually or shaded as areas, since that is the main price and ageing difference.
- To draw the antennae feathered, because a smooth antenna turns the whole thing into a butterfly.
