What a number tattoo means

The most searched number tattoos are angel numbers: one digit repeated three or four times, read as a sign that a guardian or the universe is paying attention. The readings are a convention of the last few decades rather than an ancient system. In that convention 111 is a new start, 222 balance, 333 encouragement, 444 protection, 555 change, 777 good fortune, 888 abundance and 999 an ending. People who choose one have usually seen it again and again at a particular time, on clocks and receipts and number plates, and the tattoo records that stretch of life as much as the meaning.

The same digits mean something else outside that system, and a stranger may reach for the other reading. In Chinese the word for four sounds close to the word for death, which is why many buildings in China, Hong Kong and Taiwan have no fourth floor, and to a great many Chinese speakers 444 is an omen three times over. Eight sounds close to the word for prosperity, which is why the Beijing Olympics opened on the evening of 8 August 2008, a date chosen for its eights, and 888 carries that reading wherever Chinese is spoken.

Luck supplies the next group. Seven is the lucky number of the Western world, the day of rest in Genesis and the top line on a slot machine, which is where the 777 over a pair of cherries comes from. Thirteen runs the other way and is worn for exactly that reason: lucky 13 over a pair of dice is a flash classic from hot-rod, biker and gambling imagery, bad luck carried as a charm.

The rest are personal, and they are the ones with nothing to look up. A birth year set like a shop sign, the 23 that Michael Jordan wore for the Chicago Bulls, 305 for anyone who grew up in Miami, the time 11:11 at which people make a wish. A number that stands for your own year or your own street cannot go out of fashion, which makes these the steadiest choice on the page.

Where the design comes from

Reading numbers as messages is old; reading repeated digits as angels is not. Pythagoras and his followers in the sixth century BC treated number as the structure of the world, and Hebrew gematria gives every letter a value so that words can be totalled, which is why gifts at a Jewish wedding or bar mitzvah are often given in multiples of 18, the value of chai, life. Modern Western numerology, the kind that reduces a birth date to one digit, took its current form in the early twentieth century. The angel-number reading of triples is younger still: Doreen Virtue's books did most to popularise it in the 2000s, and she disowned that work after becoming a born-again Christian in 2017. The 369 sequence is usually tied to Nikola Tesla through a line about 3, 6 and 9 that nobody has found in anything he wrote.

Choosing yours

• Settle the sequence and what it means to you first, and the style second. An angel number reads by repetition, so three or four identical digits need identical spacing and height; one digit set wider or lower breaks the pattern the piece depends on. Ask for lining figures, which sit evenly on one line, rather than the old-style figures of many book typefaces, in which 3, 4, 5, 7 and 9 drop below the line and a 777 or a 444 wanders.
• Some digits survive small and some do not. An open 4, its top left unjoined, keeps its shape where a closed 4 fills its little triangle in; an 8 has two closed counters and a 6 or a 9 one each, and those loops are the first thing to go as the ink spreads. Ones fail differently. 1111 is four parallel strokes and needs more space between them than feels natural to stay four, and a continental 1 with a long upstroke reads as a 7 to many American eyes, which is why much of Europe crosses its sevens.
• Write a date so nobody can misread it. 04.12.98 is April to an American and December to most of the world, and nothing in the digits says which. Year first, the order ISO 8601 has specified since 1988, reads the same in every country, as in 1998-12-04; if that looks too technical, spell the month or keep only the year.
