What a infinity tattoo means
The infinity symbol means without end, and it is worn most often for a bond rather than for a concept — a marriage, a sibling, a child. Its appeal is that it says permanence with a single continuous line, which is about as economical as a symbol gets.
It is also the most trend-damaged tattoo of the last twenty years, and it would be dishonest not to say so. It peaked hard around 2010-2014, frequently combined with a feather, a bird or the word "love", and that particular combination now reads as a specific date rather than as a timeless idea. The symbol itself is fine; the 2012 composition is what dated.
What survives is the version that carries something individual — a name worked into the curve, a heartbeat line, a date, or a second meaning particular to the wearer. The plain symbol says a true but very general thing, and general is what makes a tattoo feel anonymous over time.
Mathematically it is worth knowing that the lemniscate was introduced by John Wallis in 1655 as a notation, not as a symbol of eternity — that meaning was attached later. People who like the shape for its mathematical origin usually prefer a cleaner, more geometric drawing than the calligraphic version.
Where the design comes from
John Wallis introduced the lemniscate for infinity in his 1655 Arithmetica Infinitorum, and the association with eternity and love developed afterwards rather than being the reason for it. Its arrival in tattooing is very recent and traceable to the late 2000s fine-line boom, spreading through social imagery faster than almost any motif before it — which is precisely why it dates so legibly. It has no traditional flash lineage at all.

- This is the subject where the composition matters more than the drawing. A plain infinity is a shape a great many people have; the same shape carrying a name, a date, a cardiogram line or a second personal element is a tattoo about something. Decide what it holds before choosing the size.
- It is a thin continuous line that crosses itself, and the crossing is where ink spread shows first — the two strokes merge into a blob at the centre. Below roughly 5 cm ask for the crossing opened up slightly, which is a small change that adds years to how it reads.
- It is horizontal and wide, so it wants a horizontal field: the inner forearm across the arm, the collarbone, the back of the neck, the ribs. Placed vertically it stops reading as the symbol at a glance.
