How a stomach tattoo wears
This is one of the softest surfaces available to tattoo — skin over fat and muscle with no bone anywhere near the middle of it. Ink goes in comfortably and settles well, and the area is broad enough for genuinely large compositions that read as a single piece rather than a collection.
The centre line is the organising feature. The abdomen is naturally symmetrical about it, and pieces built around that axis — ornamental panels, mirrored botanicals, designs that frame the navel rather than ignoring it — look composed. Designs placed off-centre for no reason tend to look as though they were positioned by accident.
The honest consideration is change. The stomach responds more than any other placement to weight, pregnancy and muscle gain, and a design with rigid internal geometry will show that where a flowing one will not. This is not an argument against the placement — plenty of stomach pieces look excellent decades on — but it is an argument for design choices that have some give in them.
Pain and healing
Mild through the soft centre and sharper at the edges, where the work approaches the lower ribs and the hip bones. Many people are surprised how comfortable the middle is compared with its reputation; the reputation belongs to the ribs beside it. The one genuine oddity is that the stomach is ticklish for a lot of people, which is harder to sit through than pain. - Favour flowing forms over rigid grids. This is the placement most affected by the body changing shape, and organic designs absorb that.
- Expect the edges to be the hard part — the lower ribs and hip bones, not the middle.

The soft centre makes long sessions genuinely feasible, so a large stomach piece can progress faster than the same area on ribs. Cost tracks hours in the ordinary way. Large pieces are usually planned across two or three sittings, mostly to keep each one comfortable at the edges.

As private as tattooing gets — covered by any top, revealed only by swimwear or by choice. That privacy is usually the point rather than a side effect.
