What a hummingbird tattoo means

The hummingbird means living intensely rather than living long. It has the highest metabolism of any bird, beats its wings up to eighty times a second, and would starve within hours of not feeding — so it is an image of a life run at full rate, chosen far more often by people who have thought about that than by people who just like the bird.

In Mesoamerican tradition it is a memorial animal. Aztec belief held that warriors who died in battle returned as hummingbirds, and Huitzilopochtli, the war and sun god, is named for the bird. A hummingbird tattoo in that lineage is about someone who died rather than about the wearer, and this is one of the more common memorial motifs among people with Mexican and Central American heritage.

The flower pairing is nearly universal and does real work. A hummingbird alone is a bird; a hummingbird at a flower is an image of taking something you need without damaging what you take it from, which is a considerably more specific idea and the reason the pairing has lasted.

Its hovering is also the point. It is one of very few birds that can hold still in mid-air, and a design that captures a stationary bird with blurred wings says something different from one showing straightforward flight.

Where the design comes from

Hummingbirds are native only to the Americas, so they are absent from European heraldry and from the traditional tattoo flash that grew out of it — which is why there is no old-school hummingbird in the way there is an old-school swallow. They entered Western decorative art through eighteenth and nineteenth-century natural history illustration, and John Gould's 1861 monograph, with its hand-coloured plates, is the source most modern realistic hummingbird tattoos ultimately trace back to.

Choosing yours

• Iridescence is the feature and it cannot be tattooed directly. Real hummingbird colour comes from feather structure refracting light, not pigment, so no ink reproduces it. Good designs suggest it with sharp value contrast rather than by adding more colours, and an artist who understands that will say so unprompted.
• The bird is small, slender and detailed, which is a bad combination for scale. Below roughly 7 cm the beak thickens, the wings merge and it reads as a generic bird. This is a subject that rewards going one size larger than planned.
• A hovering pose with a flower needs a wider field than a bird alone; plan the composition around the flower, since it is usually the larger shape and dictates where everything else sits.
