How a thigh tattoo wears
No other surface gives you this much room without a joint through the middle of it. A thigh piece can run twenty centimetres or more without crossing anything that bends sharply, which means composition can be planned properly rather than negotiated around anatomy. Artists tend to enjoy the placement for exactly that reason, and it shows in the work: detailed illustrative pieces that would be cramped on a forearm sit comfortably here.
The tissue underneath matters as much as the area. Thigh skin has real fat and muscle beneath it, so the needle is never working directly over bone, and ink settles into a stable bed that holds its edges. Fine gradients and soft shading — the things that blur first on hands and feet — keep their subtlety here for a long time.
The front and outer thigh are the flattest and the easiest to photograph or show; the inner thigh is softer, more private, and noticeably more sensitive. Weight change affects the area more than it affects an arm, which is worth knowing without being alarmed by: gradual change distorts a thigh piece far less than people expect, and bold compositions absorb it almost entirely.

- Decide front, outer or inner early — they differ in pain, in privacy and in how the finished piece will be seen.
- Vertical or diagonal compositions follow the leg; a wide horizontal band tends to read as a stripe rather than a piece.
- Soft shading and fine gradients are worth using here specifically, because this is one of the few placements that keeps them.

Do thigh tattoos stretch if my weight changes?
Less than most people fear. Gradual change distorts a thigh piece slowly and bold compositions absorb it almost entirely; rapid change, pregnancy or significant muscle gain can show. It is a reason to favour robust designs here, not a reason to avoid the placement.
Is the inner thigh much worse than the outer?
Noticeably, yes. The skin is thinner, there are more nerve endings, and proximity to the groin makes it uncomfortable in a way the outer thigh is not. Many people who describe a thigh session as easy are describing the outer thigh.
How long can I realistically sit for?
