What a horse tattoo means

Unlike the lion or the wolf, the horse is a partner rather than a wild creature with a meaning laid over it. Genetic work published in 2021 traced every domestic horse alive today to the steppe of the lower Volga and Don around 2200 BC, and within a few centuries they were pulling chariots across Asia and Europe. For people who ride or grew up around horses, the tattoo usually means that bond, and very often one particular horse; a head in a bridle is a portrait of a partnership more than of a species.

Loose, the same animal means freedom, and that reading is mostly American. The mustangs of the West descend largely from escaped Spanish stock, feral rather than wild, yet the Wild Free-Roaming Horses and Burros Act of 1971 calls them living symbols of the historic and pioneer spirit of the West, and a galloping horse with its mane and tail streaming is that idea drawn. Rearing is defiance. A foal folded in the grass is a beginning, and is often chosen for a child.

Greek myth gave it wings and a fish's tail. Pegasus sprang from the neck of Medusa when Perseus beheaded her, which is why the winged horse here rears above her head, and Bellerophon rode him against the Chimera. Poseidon, god of horses as well as of the sea, drove hippocampi with coiled fish tails. The Trojan horse turned the most familiar animal in Greek life into the trick that ended a ten-year war.

In East Asia the horse is also a year. The Chinese zodiac credits it with energy and independence, and 2026 is a fire-horse year, the combination Japanese folklore once said made daughters headstrong and unlucky to marry: in 1966, the last one, Japan recorded around half a million fewer births than in the years either side. Shinto shrines keep an older link, since the wooden prayer plaques called ema, literally picture horses, began as a stand-in for giving the kami a living animal.

Where the design comes from

Horses were among the first animals people painted. The Panel of Horses in the Chauvet cave in France was painted more than thirty thousand years ago, and the Uffington White Horse in Oxfordshire, 110 metres of chalk-filled trench from the late Bronze Age or early Iron Age, is still the model for a horse drawn in a handful of broken strokes. George Stubbs dissected horses for eighteen months before The Anatomy of the Horse of 1766. Painters kept the flying gallop, as in Géricault's Derby at Epsom of 1821, until Eadweard Muybridge photographed a galloping horse in 1878 and showed all four hooves leave the ground only with the legs gathered under the body.

Choosing yours

• Get the legs right, because a rider checks them first. The sharp backward point of the hind leg is the hock, the horse's ankle, and below it the cannon bone runs long and straight; bend it like a dog's and the drawing looks wrong to anyone who rides. The stretched gallop of old paintings, forelegs reaching forward and hind legs flung back, reads as speed but is a convention, not something a horse does.
• Let the ears set the temper. Pricked forward, a horse is attentive; laid flat back, it is angry or frightened, and a profile head with pinned ears reads as hostile in any style.
