Crown Tattoo Ideas, Designs and Meaning
37 original crown designs drawn for InkCraftBy Uladzimir TumanauUpdated
A crown is the most copied small tattoo there is, and almost all of it is the same three-point outline. What separates one is a decision: a particular crown, a wrong material, or a break in it.

What a crown tattoo means
A crown says authority, and the interesting question is always whose. Worn plainly it is a claim about yourself, which is a bolder statement than most people intend when they pick it. Paired with a name or a date it becomes a statement about someone else, and that is the far more common reading in practice.
The tilt changes everything and costs nothing. A crown sitting level is settled and formal; a crown knocked slightly off the horizontal is a crown that has been worn, fought in, or is about to come off. It is one rotation of the drawing and the single cheapest way to make this subject specific.
A broken crown is a different tattoo altogether. Snapping one point and leaving the fragment separate turns the symbol inside out: it becomes a record of authority lost rather than held, and people who wear it usually mean something quite precise by it.
Material carries meaning too. A crown of thorns is the anti-crown and belongs to a specific religious argument about power. A crown of antlers, feathers or flame borrows the shape while refusing the institution, which is why those versions read as personal where a jewelled imperial crown reads as inherited.
Where the design comes from
The crown came into tattooing through two unconnected routes. One is heraldic and European, carried on the flash sheets that circulated among sailors along with anchors and shields, where it was rarely the subject and usually sat above something else. The other is the queen-and-king pairing that became a mass phenomenon in the 2000s, driven by matching-couple work and by the crown's adoption in hip-hop visual culture, where it functioned as a self-conferred title rather than an inherited one. Those two histories produce very different drawings: the heraldic crown is a specific researched object, the modern one is a pictogram.
Choosing yours
- Pick a particular crown rather than the generic outline, because that decision is what separates one of these from the next. An imperial crown has four arches meeting under an orb; a papal tiara has three stacked tiers; a laurel wreath is a crown with no metal in it at all. Any of these is instantly more interesting than three triangles on a bar.
- Decide on the tilt before the stencil goes on, because it will otherwise be set by the composition rather than by what you mean. Level and tipped are different tattoos made from identical parts.
- If it is going above a name or a date, the crown should be smaller than you think. It is the modifier, not the subject, and a crown that overpowers the thing it is crowning inverts the whole point.
Size, cost and placement
How big, and what it costs
A simple outline crown is a shop-minimum piece, thirty to forty-five minutes. A rendered imperial crown with arches, a cap and set stones is 10-12 cm and three hours, because every jewel is a small separate drawing. A crown of thorns is priced somewhere in between and takes longer than its size suggests.
Where it sits, and how much it hurts
Small crowns work behind the ear, on a finger, on the inner wrist and at the nape. Above a name they sit best on the chest or the inner forearm where both elements read in one glance. Large ceremonial crowns want a flat panel — the shoulder blade or the outer thigh — since the symmetry distorts on a curve.
What to ask your artist
- Which crown you actually want, by naming the type rather than saying "a crown", and to draw it from a reference of the real object.
- Whether the tilt is going to be level or knocked off, and to show you the stencil both ways before it goes on.
- At finger or behind-the-ear size, whether the design has any interior detail that will close up, and to simplify it now rather than later.
Prices vary widely by city and artist — treat these as session lengths rather than quotes, and expect a shop minimum on anything small. The cost guide turns hours into money by size, placement and style.
Common questions
What does a tilted crown mean?
Usually that the authority is held rather than inherited — worn, used, not ceremonial. It is also read as humility by some wearers and as defiance by others, which is worth knowing, because the drawing does not distinguish between them and you may be asked.
Do king and queen crown tattoos need to match exactly?
They read better when they do not. Two versions of the same crown at slightly different weights look like a pair; two identical drawings look like a sticker applied twice. Ask for one design drawn twice by hand rather than the same file used for both.
How small can a crown go?
Very small, if it is a simple outline with no interior detail — a crown is one of the few designs that survives at 3 cm. A jewelled or arched crown does not, because the facets and the cap detail merge into a solid shape within a few years.
What a crown tattoo can mean
The meanings this motif carries on the pages that argue them. Each line is that page's own reason for including it.
- Christian tattoos
- The one element in the set that is a humiliation rather than a glory, which is exactly why it is chosen. It also works as a band, so it is the version that suits a ring of the forearm or a wrist.
- Greek mythology tattoos
- The victor's wreath, and also Daphne — who was turned into a laurel tree escaping Apollo, and whose leaves he then wore. Triumph made out of someone else's refusal, which is a very Greek arrangement.
- Wedding tattoos
- The Irish ring already solved this: hands for friendship, a heart for love, a crown for loyalty, with the direction it faces saying whether you are taken. It is the one wedding motif with a built-in grammar.
